Yet that’s exactly what one Florida deputy did, when he found one struggling in shallow water on a Volusia County beach. It happened around 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, and video posted Feb. 4 by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office shows the mola mola was trapped because it was unable to swim in reverse.

They are clumsy swimmers, waggling their large dorsal and anal fins to move and steer with their clavus. Their food of choice is jellyfish, though they will eat small fish and huge amounts of zooplankton and algae as well. They are harmless to people, but can be very curious and will often approach divers. Their population is considered vulnerable.
