A rare winter storm is sweeping across the south, and Savannah is experiencing winter weather conditions for the first time in almost a decade. Freezing temps are gripping the region in the Coastal Empire,

WAYCROSS, Ga. – The rare winter wonderland in Southeast Georgia continued Wednesday morning after snow began to fall Tuesday night in Waycross. The conditions made traveling on roads hazardous and icy patches forced authorities to close all lanes of I-95 southbound at St. Marys Road (County Road 61).

It was a tricky forecast, but the snow came through about as expected. Now we have to deal with icy conditions Wednesday,” Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz said. The winter storm brought up to about 2 inches of snow over parts of north Georgia and areas south of Interstate 20.

Tuesday is a First Alert Weather Day as snow showers are possible across parts of the metro during the afternoon and evening hours.

Another winter storm is making its way into Georgia on Tuesday. Gov. Brian Kemp issued a state of emergency and local school districts have canceled classes or moved to virtual learning.
