Why Yankees' Gerrit Cole won’t grow back his beard
TAMPA — Gerrit Cole proudly rocked an iconic beard back in the day with the Astros, but that was before he signed a nine-year, $324 million contract with the Yankees in 2020. That was good news for Cole’s bank account, but his beard was an immediate casualty of the Yankees’ long-standing policy limiting facial hair.
Yankees no longer need to be clean-shaven. But will beards help them clean things up on field?
Now, a player in pinstripes will be allowed the latitude to grow something similar, ginger or no ginger. Likely it will begin with new Yankees closer Devin Williams, who reported for his spring training physical with the beard he’d worn for six years with the Milwaukee Brewers. He shaved it within 24 hours.
