Keir Starmer is heading to Brussels, becoming the first British prime minster to attend a European Union leaders’ meeting since the U.K. left the bloc five years ago.

The UK should play it smart by doing two things. It must try to avoid cosying up to Brussels while keeping trade ties strong. And in the meantime it must guarantee strong ties with DC. Britain has barely scratched the surface of its post- Brexit benefits. Climbing back into bed with the EU will undermine things further.

Sir Keir Starmer is heading to Brussels to join a gathering of European Union leaders – the first time a British prime minister has done so since Brexit. Starmer is heading over the English Channel for talks focused on defence and security co-operation and will also meet Nato secretary general Mark Rutte.
