Chicago's largest children's hospital is pausing gender-affirming surgeries for minors after President Trump's executive order called for an end to surgeries and chemical interventions for transgender people under the age of 19.

Gender-affirming surgery is already banned in military healthcare systems but the new memo appears to target hormone therapy and other care.

Hospitals and clinics that have offered gender-affirming treatments to transgender youth reacted in a variety of ways to an executive order that aims to halt the care.

Three Democratic states have sued the Trump administration over its order to ban federal funding for gender-affirming care for transgender people under 19.

In Minnesota, multiple hospitals confirmed that they are still offering gender-affirming care, and no hospitals in the state have publicly announced any cuts or pauses that would affect transgender-specific medical services.

“It’s a pocketbook issue,” said Dr. Anne Miller, a physician and board chair of the New York City chapter of LGBTQ advocacy nonprofit PFLAG, formerly known as Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. “The hospitals talk about how they are there to provide this care… this tells patients that they don’t matter.”

The lawsuit represents the strongest rebuke at the state level of Trump’s executive order targeting transgender healthcare.

The state also joined a lawsuit seeking to halt the federal Department of Government Ethics' access to sensitive information.
