Sunset Beach, near the South Carolina line, decided at 9:40 p.m. to close the only bridge to the Brunswick County island.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office, located along the coast, reported that some places received up to 8 inches of snow as first responders urged drivers to stay off ice-covered roads. The wintry weather marked the first time it snowed on the Outer Banks barrier islands since 2018, according to WNCN and WAVY.

Latest snow totals for Eastern North Carolina
Since Tuesday evening, most of the viewing area has picked up at least 2-5″ of snow, with the heaviest snow falling east of Highway 17 and along the coastal communities. Some areas along the Outer Banks will end up with 6-8″ of snow before the last of the snowflakes depart by late morning.
