The new sculpture was inspired by Michelangelo's 'The Pietà' and depicts a mother and son, pierced by the same bullets.
The military base had been renamed Fort Liberty as part of an effort to rechristen bases named for Confederate officers.
The army base was earlier named after Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general. The Pentagon said the name will now honor Roland L. Bragg, a soldier who was decorated for his service during World War II.
