The dual celebrations of a second Trump inauguration and the civil rights leader’s birth raise profound questions about Black leadership and progress toward the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream.

More than 2,000 people gathered for an annual breakfast Monday in Minneapolis to honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, hours before Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president of the United States.

"Unity is now returning to America, and confidence and pride is soaring like never before in everything we do," Trump said.

Martin Luther King III asked President-elect Donald Trump to unify the United States, specifically calling on the incoming president to talk to “everybody” on both sides of the political aisle. Trump’s inauguration on Monday will also fall on Martin Luther King Jr.

For some Black women, the high road led to the nation’s memorial to the civil rights leader.
