Syracuse, N.Y. — At least nine prison employees will be charged next week in sealed indictments issued by a grand jury in the death of inmate Robert Brooks, according to a source familiar with the case. The indictments are scheduled to be unsealed in the Oneida County Court on Tuesday, the source said.

Brooks wasn’t able to join the “second-chance club,” as his father called it, after corrections officers violently beat him to death two months ago in a Central New York prison. On Thursday, Brooks' father, Robert Ricks, spoke at a joint state Assembly and Senate budget hearing held in the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

"Let me begin by expressing my deepest sympathies the family of Robert Brooks, who was tragically and senselessly murdered at Marcy Correctional Facility."

The death of Robert Brooks, a Black man brutally beaten by corrections officers at Marcy Correctional Facility, was ruled a homicide in an autopsy report.

Eric Schneiderman is advising the father of Brooks, who was beaten to death in an upstate prison late last year.
