Uganda has begun a trial vaccination programme for the strain of Ebola viral infection that is behind the country's latest outbreak, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), while the number of confirmed cases has risen to three.

GENEVA - Uganda on Monday started the first-ever vaccination trial for the Sudan species of the Ebola virus four days after an outbreak was confirmed, the World Health Organization announced.

A Ugandan health official says a nurse died of Ebola, in the first recorded fatality since the country's last outbreak ended in 2023.

Uganda has confirmed an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the capital Kampala with the first confirmed patient dying from it on Wednesday, the health ministry said on Thursday.

Ugandan officials initiated a clinical trial on Monday for a vaccine targeting the Sudan strain of Ebola, which has resulted in one fatality since the outbreak was declared last week.
