Shortly after last November’s election, Trump threatened China, Mexico, and Canada with 10% and 25% tariffs, respectively.

Coffee prices hit a new high Monday, the day after President Donald Trump threatened – and then reversed course on – a 25% tariff on Colombia during a spat about deportation flights from the US. And the price is still rising.

Some of the purported concessions that led to a 30-day pause on the tariffs were things Canada and Mexico had already done before Trump’s threat, but it’s complicated.

Washington’s trade associations spent the weekend denouncing the across-the-board tariffs announced by Trump on imports from Mexico, Canada and China.

Trump has also threatened to introduce tariffs - a tax on imports - on goods from Canada and Mexico, but paused these for 30 days after both countries agreed to boost border security. The US president has said tariffs are needed to help the American economy and to "protect" the country from the "major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs".
