Hundreds of women were sexually assaulted before being butchered during a mass jail break from the Munzenze jail last week, as M23 fighters clashed with the Congolese army during deadly gun battles.

The Rwanda-backed group known as M23 is believed to have been responsible for the incident following its takeover of the city of Goma

More than 100 female prisoners were raped and then burned alive during a jailbreak in the Congolese city of Goma, according to the UN. Masses of prisoners broke out of Munzenze prison last Monday, after fighters from the M23 rebel group began to take over the city.
