Memphis City Council will weigh in on a possible land purchase agreement with xAI for a new wastewater treatment facility in South Memphis.

The request represents a rare public hearing for xAI since the project was announced in June 2024. xAI chose to forgo economic incentives that require disclosing investment and jobs numbers. It first went before a board when it sought to lease land from the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) of Memphis & Shelby County in October 2024.

City Council members voted to postpone any formal vote on a $820,000 land deal with xAI for a future greywater facility.
