Established by Spanish colonizers in 1622, Banton is the oldest colonial settlement in Romblon province. A walk around town reveals a Spanish-era church, fortress, and some heritage houses. Fuerza de San Jose was built between 1640 to 1650 to protect the settlement from Moro pirates from Mindanao.
