Quake 2 had a guy called "Bitterman" as the player character, and Quake 3 barely had any real lore, though it cameos both Ranger and Bitterman (and Doomguy for that matter). Quake 4 is a different main character in the same universe as Bitterman.

You can disable the abilities in custom lobby. I dont like the abilities either but to try the different movement styles sure make a lot of fun (crouch sliding, air strafing). There is also a classic duel mode, ranger vs ranger. No abilities and standard movement. I mean its free, doesnt hurt to try if you want to get some quake experience.
