The Carmel River (Rumsen: tirus ua čorx) [4] is a 41 mi (66 km) [5] river on the Central Coast of California in Monterey County that originates in the Ventana Wilderness of the Santa Lucia Mountains. [3] The river flows northwest through Carmel Valley with its mouth at the Pacific Ocean south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, at Carmel Bay.

The Carmel River watershed provides the majority of the drinking water for residents of the watershed and surrounding communities. Water from the Carmel River has been exported to the Monterey Peninsula since 1882 when the first dam on the Carmel River was built.

Through habitat restoration, advocating to end over-pumping, and supporting the decommissioning of the San Clemente Dam, CRWC works to restore the Carmel River watershed and riparian area.

Carmel River State Beach is a state park that consists mainly of protected wetlands. The mile-long beach is the meeting point of the Carmel River and Carmel Bay. On the east side is the Carmel River Lagoon which is home to a bird sanctuary, making the beach a popular destination for birdwatching.

One of the most important components of our Environmental Stewardship and Mitigation Program is the real-time monitoring of the Carmel River. The flow rates captured at various points along the river allow the Monterey Peninsula Management District to actively manage this natural resource and its inhabitants.
